Podiatry as a Career

01 February 2008

The profession of podiatry has developed over the years from its origins in chiropody to become a medical speciality dealing with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the lower limb.  Podiatry is a rewarding career. It has a broad scope of practice, much broader than many people realise. It uses a range of scientific methods for the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of a range of limb disorders. Many podiatrists are often part of a multi-disciplinary team within the healthcare system. They are enthusiastic, independent individuals who can adapt to working in a variety of clinical environments, both within the health service and the private sector. Podiatry is still a progressing profession, which enhances patient mobility and quality of life. It takes three or four years to complete the full time course, after which you will gain a BSc degree in podiatry.
